German Names

Names in Germany aren't much different than the names you have in America. Some of our most popular names are Lucas, Anna, Leon, Tim, Lena, and Finn. In America some popular names are Alexis, Anna, Braylen, and Caden. These are the top names in my country and yours. They are similar and the name Anna is popular in both countries.

Communicating with Bosnians

Most of our people identify themselves by ethnic group instead of nationality, although outside the country and for the purposes of this profile, the term Bosnians is used. Between these peoples, social behavior is very similar and much like that of other Europeans.

PORtUGUESE SCHOOl SyStEM.!

Portugal's school system is very much like our school system. They, like us, have the regular textbooks, teachers, desk, etc. They are allowed to go to school from pre-school to adult education. They have extra classes you could take also, like our colleges. In Portugal, you have to go to school at least for nine years. The minimum age for leaving school is 15 years old. Portuguese schools are pretty much the same as ours.

Marriage in France

Getting married in France is not an easy thing to do. For a couple to get married they must first satisfy a 40 day residence requirement. Also the wedding must be announced 10 days before it is to take place, by an ad in a paper or say a notice on the board in a town or village where it is to take place. To get married in France you must have: Carte de sejour (U.S. Passport or French Residence Permit), Extrait d'acte de naissance (Certified copy of birth certificate), declaration en vue de mariage (Affidivat of marital statuse or Certificate of celibacy), certificat de coutume (Affidivat of law), and certificat medical prenuptial (Medical Certificate).

Malasodas... DOUGHNUtS.!

I made Portuguese doughnuts for our class last night. They are called Malasadas. Basically, they are fried doughnuts with regular, all-purpose sugar on them. The class really liked them. Here is the recipe and directions if anyone would like to make them at home...

Ingredients
  • Oil for deep frying
  • 1 (1/4-ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
  • 6 eggs
  • 6 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • Sugar to roll the Malasadas

Directions

In a large deep pot or fryer heat the oil to 350 degrees F.

In a small mixing bowl, whisk the yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar, and 1/4 cup of the warm water. Set the mixture aside. In an electric mixer, and the eggs and whip until the eggs are thick and pale yellow in color. Change the mixer attachment to a dough hook. With the machine running slowly add the yeast mixture, melted butter, milk, and half and half. Add the salt. Add the flour, 1 cup at a time. Mix until the mixture forms a soft ball, leaves the sides of the bowl, and climbs up the dough hook. Remove the dough and turn into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set the bowl in a warm, draft free space. Let the dough rise until double in size, about 1 1/2 hours.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and dust the surface of the dough with flour. With a rolling pin, roll out the dough, about 1/4-inch thick, in the shape of a rectangle. Cover the dough with a greased piece of plastic wrap (this will prevent the dough from sticking to the wrap) let the dough rise until double in size, about 1 hour. Using a sharp French knife, cut the dough into 1 inch squares. Fry a couple of the squares at a time, until golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes, stirring constantly for overall browning. Remove the doughnuts from the oil and drain on a paper-lined plate. Roll the doughnuts in sugar and serve warm.

Wedding in Ireland

Hey y'all, my friend Andrew just told me that his older sister is going to get married and I thought I would right about Irish Weddings. Irish wedding are very beautiful things. The groom usually wears a kilt and the bride has a white dress that symbolizes purity. There are many things the couples have to do during the wedding such as hold hands and have there wrist tied together. They still preform in a church usually and do the unity candle are always big parts of Irish weddings. I can't wait for the wedding, it is going to be so cool to see.

Bosnia and Herzegovina to Canada

Each year, Canada welcomes people from other countries who move here to begin a new life. Our people have been immigrating to Canada for a long time; however, after the outbreak of Civil War in 1992, we came to Canada in larger in numbers as refugees. Some are now joined by family members. Although this cultural profile provides insights into some customs, it does not cover all facts of life. The customs described may not apply in equal measure to all newcomers from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Irish Christmas.

Hey y'all, I have been talking about Halloween for the past few post, which got me interested in other holidays. Here in Ireland the also celebrate Christmas with many of the same traditions we have. Some different traditions the have is most kids get a "Advent Calendar," which is a calendar that has slots for every day of the month leading up to Christmas. They get to open up a slot every day to find a peace of chocolate in there. Another thing is hospitality in Ireland is a major roll in their culture, exspecaily during Christmas. People back a lot of food and entertain many guest during Christmas. I can't wait for Christmas to roll around here, it is going to be fun.

United Kingdom :)))))))))

Hey! so the crime here in Sweden is pretty bad. 53% of Swedish crimes are theft, 13% are contact related, 12% is vandalism, 6% is traffic crimes, 5% is fraud related, and 3% narcotics related. My mother will not let me outside. in 2003, 189 homocides were reported in Sweden! Thats pretty bad! It is only 85% percent safe to walk in the dark. 1,234,785 crimes happen in Sweden. This is a dude about to rob a gas station or something.

Christmas in the UK!

Did you know that the tradition of hanging stockings came from here in the uk?This tradition dates back to the actual Saint Nicholas. Here in the UK children write letters to Father Christmas, instead of putting them in the mailbox they put them in the fireplace. The draught carries the letters up the chimney and Father Christmas reads the smoke. Here in the UK we believe that mistletoe brings the household good luck and keeps evil spirits away.I love Christmas!!!I really enjoyed writing to you guys!

Halloween bonfire in Ireland

Hey, turns out that my mom wont make me a leprechaun costume for Halloween, and the stores here don't make Leprechaun costumes in my size. On the good size, I still have a t-shirt from the states that says "this is my costume." After I go trick or treating with my friend Andrew, I was told that it is an Irish tradition to hold a big Bonn fire and share candy. I can't wait, and I hope the next time I go back to the states that I can share this Irish tradition with them.

Beaches in France

France is surrounded by 3 bodies of water. From the warm crystal blue water of the Mediterranean Sea, to the long, sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and the picturesque coastline of the English Channel. The beaches on Southern France are normally hotter, sandier, and more expensive. Nice is a major spot in Southern France, while St. Tropez and Cannes are more posh. The beaches along the atlantic coast are longer and less crowded then their counterparts along the French Riviera. The Atlantic also features the historic D-day beaches.

Italia in minitura

you problably have never thought of theme parks in Italy but their are plenty of zoos and parks. The one that I thought was the best was Italia in miniatura. This park is basicaly Italy in miniatures. Their are airports, train stations, and anything else you could think of. here is a picture.

My Favorite Dessert

Hola its Margarita again. My favorite dessert in Madrid has to be Flan. Its very difficult to make but its very delicious! This basic flan recipe is also used to make flans of different flavors by substituting another liquid for part or all of the milk. For example, the best sweet oranges in Spain come from Valencia and Murcia, and an orange flan, made from freshly squeezed juice, is popular there. Here is the recipe:

  • 4 cups whole milk

  • 2 strips lemon zest

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 5 whole eggs

  • 2 egg yolks

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

For the caramelized sugar coating:

  • 1/2 cup sugar

    Preheat the oven to 300ºF.

To prepare the caramelized sugar coating, spread the sugar evenly in the bottom of a heavy saucepan and place over medium-low heat. It may take several minutes before the sugar begins to melt. Without stirring, watch the sugar closely as it begins to liquefy at the edges. All of it will slowly turn first into a yellowish and then golden syrup and finally into a brown caramel sauce.

When the liquefied sugar is turning from golden to brown, immediately remove the saucepan from the heat. (If you miss this point, the sugar will quickly turn too dark and taste bitter and you will need to discard it and begin again.)

Working swiftly, pour the liquid caramel into 12 custard cups each 3 1/2 inches in diameter and tilt to cover the bottom and sides evenly. It is important to do this transfer quickly, as the change in temperature causes the caramel to solidify rapidly. Set aside.

In a saucepan, combine the milk, lemon zest, and cinnamon stick over high heat and bring to a boil. Immediately decrease the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes to infuse the milk with the flavor of the seasonings. Remove from the heat and let cool.

In a bowl, combine the whole eggs, egg yolks, and granulated sugar and whisk until foamy. Pour the cooled milk through a fine-mesh sieve held over the egg mixture and whisk until well blended. Pour the mixture into the coated custard cups.

Arrange the custard cups, not touching, in a large, deep baking pan or roasting pan. Pull out the oven rack, put the baking pan on it, and pour boiling water to a depth of about 1 inch into the pan to create a water bath. Bake for about 1 1/2 hours, or until set when tested with a thin-bladed knife in the center. Carefully remove the water bath from the oven, and then carefully remove the custards from the water bath and set aside to cool completely.

You can cover and refrigerate the cooled custards and serve them cold, or you can serve them at room temperature. One at a time, run the knife around the inside of each cup to loosen the edges of the custard and then invert the flan onto a dessert plate.

Random things about Luxembourg

Hey guys! I recently found a blog from someone who visited Luxembourg. They talked about some of the things that they did while they were here. My country is a UNESCO site. To get the best views, you should do the Wenzel Walk, as I already mentioned in my other post. One of the most popular museums we have in Luxembourg is the Musee de l'Histoire de la Ville. Not only is it a museum, it is also a cafe. I've been there before and I really enjoyed it. I did because it has a wonderful terrace in the summer time.

Schools in Italy

The school system in Italy is similar to America. They have kindergarden (not required to attend), elementary school, middle school, and high school. We take school from age 3 until we are 19. School is taken very seriously in Italy.

French bread pudding recipe

I think france has some of the best desserts in the world. My favorite dessert would have to be french bread pudding! It is so good, and I think I might even bring some for my 2nd period class on Monday. Here is the recipe.

French bread pudding recipe: "1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
1/2 cup raisins
1 quart half-and-half
4 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 pinch nutmeg
1/4 pound butter, melted
Recipe
Soak the raisins for 30 minutes in warm water, then drain well.
Fill a 9-inch square baking pan with the bread cubes and sprinkle the raisins on top. Use enough bread to come to the top of the pan.
Whisk the remaining ingredients together to make a batter, pour over bread, and stir lightly. Allow the bread to soak 1/2 hour. If there's not enough batter, add a little more milk to the pan.
Bake at 325 degrees F for about 40 minutes, until the pudding is golden brown and puffed up around the edges.
The center should be set but still a little soft."

Here is a picture of a Swedish Muslim mosque. Swedish Islamic people are acually quite common here, but so are Catholics and Lutheran Christians. 23% of Swedens believe that there is a God, 53% believe that there is some type of life force out there, and 23% believe in NO god. Which is sad because i love God... but anyhoo! A lot of sweds have been losing there religion so I do not know if that is good.. There are also a lot of Orthodox religions here.

Family Life in Italy

Its Alfonzo again and I'm gonna talk about family life. Although the birth rate in Italy is low extended family is very important. We invite family over for celebrations and Sunday lunches. I love my aunts and uncles. My Uncle Al always has the best stories. We make an effort to include children in all activities and celebrations. They stay up late and play in the piazza while their parents enjoy a drink with friends in a nearby cafe. The biggest family time is at meals. This is the most valued and cherished time for family. Every meal is a big to do. Even at breakfast we all eat together. When we have extended famliy over to eat afterwards we go onto the porch and chat. Neighbors come over and just relax. The kids and a few grown ups will usually take them on a walk after dinner in the evening. I love my family and value them greatly, because without them I wouldn't be where I am today.

Italian Education

Its Alfonzo again and I am currently am attending a University where I live. In Italy we only have to attend school until we are 16. Thankfully no schools have uniforms which is good because they look ridiculous. But you can always see school kids because of their huge backpacks. In highschool I studied classics, science teacher training, fine arts, foreign languages, and technical studies. There is a big exam to finish and you have to pass. Right now I am earning my laurea which is in between bachelors degree and masters degree. My University is packed full of people and so are all of them. They are overcrowded, bu we still have fun.

Irish Leprechaun

Hey y'all, I got curous when I desided to go as a Leprechaun, where did Leprecons come from, and what are they anyway. The lepreachaun is a said to be a solitary creature, whose pricipal occupation is making and mending shoes. and who enjoys practical jookes. According to yeast, the great wealrh of these fairies comes from the "treasure- crocks, buried of old in war-time", which they have uncovered and apporprieated. According to McAnally the leprechaun is the son of an "evil spirit" and a "degenerate fairy" and is "not wholly good nor whollly evil" I think thats cool.

United Kingdom :)))))))))

People now belive that the Castle is now haunted.

Red, White, and Blue

While I attended a Netherlands school, I had a few people explain to me what the colors of their flag meant. Some people seem very proud of their flag. The red stripe was originally orange, along with the red and blue stripes, are based on the coat of arms of Prince Williams of Orange, who led the flight for Dutch Independance. The flag was nicknames "The Prince's Flag" for Prince Williams. The design was inspired by the Russian flag and adopted on February 19, 1937. Its amazing to find what you can learn by talking to some people.

The weather in Spain

Spai has a Mediterranian climate. They say the reason Spai has so many tourists is because the weather is always great. The beaches are always almost sunny all the time. That is in the south up orth and rains more. In the summer it gets too hot. Overall they have hot dry summers and mild winters. The weather in Spain is usually great!!!

Spain Weddings

For a catholic wedding to occur in Spain, the couple must contact their local diocese and discuss their plans. The local diocese will then organize the paperwork through the Heads of the Catholic Churches in the couple's country of residence and Spain. Weddings in Spain can help by providing the name of the priest and location in Spain where the couple wishes to marry, but the rest has to be organized by the couple with their church. This process can take up to a year. The ceremony itself may be carried out in Spanish or English, depending on the priest and the church.

German Unity Day

German Unity Day is a national holiday comemorating the reunification of Germany. It is a large festival that takes place in two locations at once. There is a traditional festival in Berlin every year and another located in a different city each year. The Holiday began only 19 years ago in 1990. The festival is actually coming up this weekend. It is always on October 3rd and this year it fall on a Saturday. When it was created it was going to take place on November 7th but in addition to the good things that happened on that date it was also the beginning of the Nazis fighting against the Jews.

Sprituality

Two religions in our country are Islam and Christianity, both have a long history in the Balkan region. Over centuries Christians and Muslims have intermarried freely in our country. People in the region converted to Christianity around the 9th century. Today the most important churches are Eastern Orthodox and Catholic. Eastern Orthodoxy arose from the Great Schism in 1054.

Halloween In Ireland

Hey y'all. It's the first day of October and I am staring to get excited about Halloween. I wasn't sure if they had Halloween in Ireland, but to my surprise and happiness they do. In America we participate in Halloween on the last day of the month of October. In Ireland they celebrate it on the last Monday of the month of October. They still do the traditions of dressing up and going to house to house for candy, but not only do they say "trick or treat" the also may say "help the Halloween party." They still have jack-o-lanterns and it's suppose to be just like it was in America with just few differences. Another thing is they have games and a big bone fire after trick-or-treating. I can't for Halloween here, I think I will be festive and go as a 6' 4" leprecon.

The italina flag as you can see is pretty awesome. The only difference is that the Irish flag has orange, green, and white in it. The Italian flag has red, white, and green in it. it is also familiar to the ivory coast flag. The ivory coast flag is the Irish flag just backwords. The one t the very top is the top is the Italian flag. The one below it is the Irish flag, and the one at the very bottom is the ivory coast flag.
